A Brief History of Presidents Day Over the last few years we have been much indebted to Brian Gee (1st XI captain: 1966-74) for arranging some most enjoyable occasions. Presidents Day has not always been known as such but throughout the years has taken on one name or another. The first such game took place in 1951 against the National Association of Groundsman, which included many former county players, and was arranged by Cecil Bretherton, a founder member of the club the fixture continued through to the mid 1950s, and was replayed in 1959-60 From the clubs earliest days all social members were known as Vice-Presidents, and the first occasion where they were specifically invited was in 1957 against Kenilworth CC. Throughout the 1960s the selected opposition was considered to be of equal strength to our own side. Clubs such as Bridge Trust Old Boys, Halesowen, Old Silhillians, and Tamworth all visited us during the decade. Throughout the 1970s the fixture lapsed, and it was not until 1980 that it was commerated again, and continued through the 1980s. In 1990 the club played Aldridge and invited many of the clubs benefactors in what was called Sponsors Day along with the Presidents guests. During the 1990s Presidents Day took a back seat with games in 1992,93,98 and 99, this was principally due to the club hosting games for the Old England XI, and benefit matches for Andy Lloyd, Gladstone Small, Asif Din and Paul Smith.
